Today we celebrate World Bamboo Day. An ancient plant on Earth, bamboo belongs to the grass family and exhibits great diversity, distributed across a hundred genera and more than 1,600 species, showcasing its adaptation to various regions of the planet, especially in tropical climates.

Bamboo renews itself through annual shoots, protecting the soil from erosion and reclaiming degraded areas. It offers a multitude of uses for humanity, including food, energy generation, furniture and utensil manufacturing, construction and decoration materials, basketry, rugs, toothpicks, musical instruments, paper, charcoal, among many others.

At Econew, we research the use of bamboo as biomass, a clean energy source, through a pioneering project in partnership with the Federal University of Viçosa and EMBRAPII – the Brazilian Company for Industrial Research and Innovation. The project involves planting bamboo species in the heart of the Brazilian “cerrado”. Our goal is to socially and economically develop the region and put an end to biomass exploitation in native deforested areas. This reinforces our commitment to the ESG agenda and sustainability.

We hope that in the future, bamboo forests like the one in the photo from Mato Grosso, Brazil, can help preserve the environment, reduce CO2 emissions – bamboo is highly efficient in capturing carbon from the atmosphere – and provide quality biomass for sectors such as steel and cellulose, among many others.
